Orit Adar Bechar is an artist and art teacher living and creating in Israel. Adar Bechar's works focus on painting, sculpture, video, and photography, often combining these mediums.
She studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and at the Midrasha School of Art in Ramat HaSharon. Between 1987-1990, Adar Bechar lived in New York, where she received a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. Upon returning to Israel, she began working as a senior lecturer in art at the Midrasha School of Art and at Talpiot Academic College of Education.
Adar Bechar's work is characterized by a deep exploration of space and its interaction with human perception. Her artistic work focuses on space as a fundamental concept. She began her career creating site-specific installations. These works examined how viewers interacted with and behaved in the spaces she designed. Her spaces often deviated significantly from conventional proportions. Many were constructed as mazes, challenging viewers' perceptions and expectations of space. She also created smaller pieces that resembled architectural models, with internal spaces viewers could peek into. These explored the relationship between what is visually perceived and what is imagined.
As her work evolved, she incorporated video, which allowed her to add elements of time and movement to her spatial explorations. Collaboration with sound artists further enhanced the spatial experience in her video works.
In the last decade, Adar Bechar has been creating in additional mediums - painting, plaster reliefs, staged photography, and graphic works. This multi-media work enriches and deepens her creation, as working in one medium influences the work in another medium.
Adar Bechar has presented 15 solo exhibitions in Israel and numerous group exhibitions in Israel and around the world. Her works have been exhibited in museums including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel Museum in Jerusalem, Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Petach Tikva Museum of Art, and Mmoma in Moscow. She has also shown at galleries such as Sala 1 Gallery in Rome, Scala Mata Gallery as part of the Venice Biennale events in 2009, and Hunter College Gallery. Adar Bechar's work has been featured in biennales including the Venice Biennale in 2009 and the Mediations Biennale in Poznan, Poland.
